LPMPC MILESTONE

By: Elisa Marta P. Sarical

Since the inception of the Pineapple Integrated Pineapple Processing Project of the Labo Progressive Multi-Purpose Cooperative (LPMPC) with the tools, machineries and equipment granted by the Cottage Industry Technology Center (CITC) thru the facilitation of the DTI-CNPO, the cooperative gained prominence as pioneer in the processing of Formosa pineapple fiber in the Bicol Region.

The continuous product development, promotion and market tie-ups duly facilitated by DT-CNPO for the machine decorticated fiber, handwoven piña cloth and handmade paper of the Labo Progressive Multi-Purpose Cooperative resulted to an increase of sales from Php 377,050.00 of year 2006 to Php 1,046,389.09 as of November 2007.

All the efforts exerted by the LPMPC in the development of by-products from pineapple fiber did not go unnoticed by various sectors.  The LGU-Labo not only provided support and financial assistance for the activities relative to the advancement of the by-products from pineapple but also granted the LPMPC with Php 1 M for the establishment of virgin coconut oil processing center which is now being implemented by the LPMPC.

The Department of Agriculture National Office, thru the facilitation of DTI-CNPO, also approved the project proposal on the same project  of Integrated Pineapple Processing Center in the amount of Php 2,146,783.82 under its Agriculture Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (ACEF).  The first tranche in the amount of Php 644,000.00 had been released last September 2007.  The remaining amount of Php 1,502,783.82 will be released this 2008.  The project which will finance not only the processing of pineapple fiber but also the processing of pineapple fruit into pineapple juice, is now being implemented.

The utilization of fresh pineapple leaves, previously considered as farm wastes, into a prized raw material for the production of machine decorticated fiber deeply impressed the consultant of Spain government who conducted evaluation of NGOs recommended by the Department of Agriculture  regional field Unit V thru the facilitation of DTI-CNPO, as prospective partner of Spain government in its implementation of agriculture-based projects under its Strengthening the Agro-Industrial Sector in Bicol Region Sub-Project, RP-Spain Joint Commission Project.  The LPMPC will be granted financial assistance in the amount of Php 1,133,000.00 intended for the expansion of its machine decortication project.  The grant fund is due to be released this January 2008.  The project will make the LPMPC as consolidator/buyer of all machine decorticated fiber that will be produced by various municipalities granted with the same project by the Spain government.
